Ray Vander Zaag earned his Ph.D. in 1999 from Carleton University in Ottawa, defending a thesis titled 'We Do Not Yet Have Development'—Encounters of Development Knowledges, Identities and Practices in a NGO Program in Rural Haiti.'
His primary research interests are in rural community development and NGOs, particularly how development identities and practices are constructed and negotiated in the course of development interventions.
Other research areas include agricultural research and development, and the relationship of post-development and faith-based approaches to development.
He worked for 8 years with a church-based NGO in rural Haiti, implementing and managing integrated community development programs, and for one year as a Project Officer at the Canadian International Development Agency.
