BA in International Development Studies

A further 3 credit hours from IDS Core Courses.
A further 24 credit hours from IDS Area Courses. In meeting the IDS
Area Courses requirement, ECON-1104/3 Introduction to Economic Theory
(or equivalent) must be completed, plus 6 credit hours from a list of
approved IDS Area courses.
A further 18 credit hours of Cognate courses. In meeting the IDS
Cognate requirement, a minimum of 9 credit hours (and maximum of 15
credit hours) must be completed from a list of approved applied research
and skills related courses. Four year IDS majors must also take a
minimum of 3 credit hours (and maximum 6 credit hours) of Language
courses. For students whose first language is not English, an Academic
Writing course may be substituted, with permission of the IDS student
advisor.
Students are also encouraged to consider applied research and
skills-related courses offered through the University’s Division of
Continuing Education, such as Financial Management for the Not-for
Profit Sector or Effective Grant and Proposal Writing, and courses
offered by other institutions. To determine whether such courses or
language study courses offered by other institutions are eligible for
IDS cognate credit, please contact the IDS Coordinator.

Area Courses requirement, ECON-1104/3 Introduction to Economic Theory,
(or equivalent) must be completed. The selection of IDS Area Courses by
Honours students should be done in consultation with the IDS Honours
advisor.
Minimum 63 credit hours from International Development Studies: Core
courses (a minimum of 36 credit hours) and Area Courses (27 credit
hours) including a minimum of 6 credit hours of designated Theory
Courses and a minimum of 9 credit hours of designated Research Courses,
plus a minimum of 18 credit hours at the 3/4000 level, and a minimum of
12 credit hours at the 4000 level.
